An Art, A Science

What is the formula for success in hair colouring?

The fundamental difference between professional hair colouring and box dye is that the formula is mixed specifically for the individual. Box dyes offer a single shade intended for everyone; in a salon colouring service, your hair's natural colour pigment, porosity, previous chemical treatments, and target shade are all taken into account, and a unique result formula is created by blending 3–4 different colours and oxidants (%3, %6, %9, %12) in precise proportions. At TEO Beauty Centre, this formula is recorded on the guest's card at every colouring appointment, guaranteeing a consistent result at every subsequent visit.

The most important concept to understand in colouring is the 'underlying pigment'. Natural black hair contains red-chestnut undertones, brown hair holds copper, and blonde hair carries golden undertones. As the hair is lightened, these underlying pigments are revealed, and the target shade must be selected to neutralise them accordingly. For example, to transition from a natural brown to an ashy blonde, the hair must first be lifted 6–7 levels with a lightener, then the copper neutralised with a violet-blue toner. Without this knowledge, the result will be green, orange, or raw yellow.

The first 72 hours after colouring are critical. The hair must not be washed during this period, as the colour molecules have not yet fully settled within the hair shaft. At TEO Beauty Centre, we recommend a combination of a pigment-fixing serum, a sulphate-free shampoo set, and Olaplex No.3 home care after every colouring appointment. With this trio, the colour retains its vibrancy for 6–8 weeks; if neglected, noticeable fading begins within 3 weeks.

"Box dye is a single colour; salon colour is a formula written exclusively for you."

Post-Colour Care

The golden rules for keeping your colour vibrant for 6–8 weeks

What to Do

  • Do not wash your hair for the first 72 hours — allow the pigment to lock in.
  • Use a sulphate-free shampoo; it releases colour more slowly.
  • Apply a pigment-refreshing mask once a week.
  • Protect against sun exposure with a UV-filter spray.
  • Book a salon toner refresh every 6 weeks.

What to Avoid

  • Sulphate- and salt-based shampoos strip colour 3x faster.
  • Excessively hot showers open the cuticle, causing pigment to bleed.
  • Pool and sea water turn the tone green or orange.
  • Do not colour over it with box dye; it causes patchy results.
  • Do not use a curling iron or straightener without a heat protectant.
