Keratin is a structural protein that makes up approximately 90% of the hair shaft. Factors such as colouring, heat, summer sun, sea water and chlorinated pools gradually break down keratin bonds over the years, leaving hair frizzy, dull, prone to static and prone to breakage. A keratin treatment replenishes these depleted protein chains with liquid keratin applied externally, then seals them in with heat. The primary purpose of the treatment is therefore repair, not straightening — straightening is a secondary benefit. This is why, when applied to wavy but healthy hair, the hair does become straighter; however, with very curly Afro-type hair, frizz control and increased shine are observed rather than straightening. The most significant differentiator in a keratin treatment is the product used. The Brazilian blowouts that were popular in the early 2010s contained high levels of formaldehyde, posing a serious health risk to both the practitioner and the client. TEO Beauty Centre has worked exclusively with new-generation, formaldehyde-free, chloroxygen-based formulas since 2018. Not only are these products far more comfortable in terms of odour, but because they are able to seal protein more deeply into the hair shaft, their effects last for 4–5 months. The Brazilian-sourced Cadiveu and Inoar families, together with the British Kerastraight range, are all dermatologist-approved and offer specially delayed formula options for expectant guests.

We remind every guest that the first 48 hours after the treatment are golden: hair must not be washed, tied up, tucked behind the ears, or in any way disturbed. During this critical window, the keratin completes its process of embedding itself into the hair shaft at a molecular level. Afterwards, simple habits — washing two to three times a week with a salt-free, sulphate-free shampoo, avoiding straighteners or curling irons without heat protection, and rinsing with fresh water after the sea or pool — all help to prolong results.
